ABOUT EMU TREKKERS
How much of the tour price actually goes to helping kids in need?
Once we cover the overhead costs relating to your hike, such as transportation, insurance, equipment, food, credit card fees and administration, all of the remainder of the ticket price is given to help kids in need. This is possible because all of our amazing, local guides volunteer their time and expertise to support our cause. As a not-for-profit charity, we are committed to being fully transparent about how the money is spent. You can find all the details in our annual report here.
Where does the money from the hikes go?
The money raised from the hikes is used to support the education, health and welfare of disadvantaged children and youth. We currently support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to improve literacy rates among remote Indigenous communities in Australia. We also support UNICEF Australia with their mission to promote and protect children's rights in Australia and around the world. To find out more, see here.
How many volunteers does Emu Trekkers have?
Emu Trekkers prides itself on being a grass-roots, volunteer-run organisation. We have over 50 volunteers assisting with all facets of the organisation, whether it be leading treks, responding to booking enquiries, or tailoring walks to suit your needs.
How can I view Emu Trekkers financial records?
Emu Trekkers publishes an annual report each financial year which can be found here. Our financial records are also published annually on the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission here.

ABOUT THE HIKES
What type of shoes do I need for the hikes?
It is really important that you wear closed shoes with good grip on any of our walks. This is to minimise the risk of injury from slippages, cuts, insect bites etc. Running shoes/trainers should be ok, but specifically designed hiking shoes are preferable. On our multi-day walks where you carry a pack, you may also consider boots with better ankle support.
What fitness level is required for the hikes?
Generally, all our walks require at least a moderate fitness level. They will all take place in the natural environment. Our multi-day hikes are more demanding physically than our day hikes as, except for the pack-free tours, all participants have to carry a full pack weighing 12-15 kg on average, and the length is greater as well. If you are concerned about your level of fitness, please contact us to discuss or consider doing a day walk first.
I am keen to go on a multi-day hike with Emu Trekkers, but have never done one before. Is it possible for me to go?
Yes. One of the aims of Emu Trekkers is to get more people experiencing the Australian bush and trying out new activities. Our guides will do their best to make sure that you feel comfortable throughout the trek, and teach you tips and tricks along the way. What is more important is ensuring that you have an adequate fitness level. Please get in touch with us if you would like to talk about this requirement.
Do I have to carry a pack on the multi-day hikes?
We offer a variety of multi-day hike options, some of which require trekkers to carry a pack. Please check each individual hike to see if it is a pack-free trek or not. When organising packs, the guides will seek to distribute evenly the weight among participants with the aim that no participant will carry more than 25% of their body weight.
Do you cater to different dietary requirements?
Emu Trekkers will attempt to cater to all dietary requirements, and has plans in place for vegetarians. Please let us know if you have a dietary requirement and we will let you know if it is possible for us to accomodate you.
Will I be sharing a tent with others?
All our tents are designed for dual occupancy, and it is our standard approach that we will pair people up of the same sex to share tents for the multi-day hikes in order to reduce pack weights. However, if you do not feel comfortable sharing a tent with someone else, please get in touch with us before booking to see if alternative arrangements can be made.
What kind of transport can I expect on a tour?
Emu Trekkers aims to use local transport as much as possible on tours as it believes it is both the most economical and environmentally friendly form of transport. Depending on the hike, this may include ferries, buses and/or trains.
Are we able to book a private tour with Emu Trekkers?
Emu Trekkers is available for private tours. Please contact us to discuss your requirements, preferences and obtain a tailored quote.
Are children allowed on tours?
Children above the age of 13 years are welcome to participate on Emu Trekkers' tours so long as they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.
What happens if I have to cancel my trip?
Emu Trekkers can offer a full refund minus a 20% administration fee for cancellations made more than 30 days prior to departure. Unfortunately, no refund can be provided for non attendance or cancellations made less than 30 days prior to a trip departing. If you fail to join a tour, join it after departure, or leave it prior to its completion, no refund can be made. No refunds can be made for any donation made to Emu Trekkers. Please see our full Terms and Conditions for more information, or email Emu Trekkers should you have any questions.
What happens if there is a risk of fire, flooding, electrical storm etc?
Emu Trekkers constantly reviews detailed weather forecasts prior to all of its hikes. For safety reasons, Emu Trekkers will alter, delay or cancel treks if there is a foreseeable risk of bushfires, flooding, electrical storms or other safety risks in the area. If treks are cancelled, Emu Trekkers will either offer an alternative walk of the same duration in an area unaffected by the risk, or offer a full refund.
What happens if there is an emergency during the trek?
All our tours have emergency response plans in place in case of emergency. Our guides are also trained in first aid and carry safety equipment on all our hikes.
